Yesterday, the 103rd Engineering Science and technology forum hosted by the Chinese Academy of engineering was held in Shanghai. Many academicians and experts explored the new progress of textile technology.

According to Professor Xia Yanzhi of Qiingdao University, alginate fiber spinning technology with kelp as raw material has been successfully developed. "Kelp clothing" is expected to enter the market next year.

Kelp is a kind of brown alga, which contains rich seaweed fiber.

Xia Yanzhi told reporters that the experimental tests showed that alginate fibers had the same strength as cotton fibers, and even felt better. They could be used as textile raw materials.

Besides,

Fiber also has many excellent properties that many cotton and linen materials do not possess.

After combining different metal ions in the seaweed fiber, it can make it have some antibacterial and anti electromagnetic radiation function, and become one of the top grade functional fabrics.

Moreover, alginate fibers are naturally flame retardant and can play a role in special fields such as fire protection clothing manufacturing.

Professor Xia revealed that the alginate fiber spinning technology has entered the pilot stage, and the seaweed cloth produced has been able to meet.

Production requirements.

According to the current level of technology, seaweed fiber textile can achieve "one kilogram of kelp and one metre cloth". After large-scale commissioning, it is expected to further reduce costs.

Compared with similar functional fabrics, the expected price of seaweed will not be very high in the future.

China is a large country of seaweed production. The annual output of seaweed accounts for more than half of the world's total output.

Like Qingdao, Shanghai is also a "big household" in the production of seaweed. The development of seaweed fiber has great potential.

Experts at the meeting pointed out that the environmental characteristics of seaweed fiber should be concerned.

Natural cotton, linen and animal fibers will compete with grain for land, while synthetic fibers will face the prospect of oil depletion.

In comparison, alginate fiber is the third largest textile material source besides traditional natural fibers and synthetic fibers. It is a kind of degradable and renewable materials, and has special significance for the development of China's textile industry.

Professor Xia Yanzhi said that the textile industry wastewater has always been an important source of water pollution, and the process of extracting fiber from seaweed is water, which is a "zero pollution" green process.

Not only that, specially processed seaweed fibers can also be used to adsorb heavy metal ions in water, and become "meritorious ministers" to control water pollution.
